Download Kindle Content

After you connect to a wireless network, you can buy and download books, magazines, newspapers, and Kindle games to your Kindle. If you cannot connect to a wireless network, you can transfer your items from your computer to your Kindle via USB.

Buy & Download Kindle Content

After you connect wirelessly, you can buy books or periodicals from the Kindle Store and download them directly to your device.

  1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to a wireless network.

    If you are not sure if your Kindle is connected, go to Check the Status of Your Wireless Connection.

  2. To visit the Kindle Store, press the Menu button, and then select Shop in Kindle Store.
  3. When you are ready to purchase a title, select Buy to purchase a single book or periodical.

    To subscribe to a periodical, select Subscribe now.

    Tip: Select Try a Sample to download the beginning of the book for free.
    After you purchase content, it automatically downloads to your Kindle. The content is also stored in your Kindle Library in the Cloud so you can download it to other Kindle devices or apps registered to the same account.
  4. Press the Home button to show and open your new Kindle content.

Borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library

You can borrow one book from the Lending Library each calendar month. You can deliver the book to other Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account.

  1. From your device, open the Kindle Store.
  2. Select All Categories, and then select Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

  3. When you've made your selection, select Borrow for Free.

    You can borrow only one book at a time. If you've already borrowed a book, you'll be prompted to return it before you can borrow a different book.

    Note: Available titles may change each calendar month.

If your Amazon Prime account is disabled after you borrow a book, you will lose access to the book you borrowed.

Your bookmarks, notes, and highlights within the book will be saved to your Amazon account. They are available if you borrow or purchase the book later.

Download from the Cloud

After you buy a Kindle book, magazine, newspaper, or Kindle game, the item is saved to Your Kindle Library in the Cloud. After you connect wirelessly, you can download items from the Cloud to your Kindle.

To access the Cloud, your Kindle must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you're unsure about your wireless connection, go to Check the Status of Your Wireless Connection.

All of your purchased Kindle books and periodicals are archived in the Cloud. Even if you remove items from your Kindle, you can download them again to any Kindle device or reading app that is registered to the same Amazon account.

  1. To access content from the Cloud, press the Menu button, and then select View Archived Items.
  2. To add content to your Kindle, select the title and it will download automatically. Your content will be listed on your Home screen.

Deliver to Your Kindle

After you buy a Kindle book, magazine, newspaper, or Kindle game, the item is saved to Your Kindle Library in the Cloud. From Manage Your Kindle on Amazon, you can deliver items from Your Kindle Library to your Kindle.

To successfully deliver Kindle content, your Kindle must be registered to the same Amazon account you use to access Manage Your Kindle.

Make sure your Kindle is connected wirelessly. If you are not sure, go to Check the Status of Your Wireless Connection.

  1. Visit Manage Your Kindle and locate the content you want to deliver to your Kindle.
  2. From the Actions drop-down, select Deliver to my...
  3. From the Deliver to drop-down, select your Kindle, and then select Deliver. Your book or periodical is delivered and automatically downloaded to your Kindle.
  4. From your Kindle, press the Home button to show and open the title.

    Sync manually to receive the title. Press the Home button, press the Menu button, and then select Sync and Check for Items.

Transfer from a Computer to Your Kindle

If you don't have a Wi-Fi connection, you can transfer books, magazines, or newspapers from a computer to your Kindle via USB. To borrow some public library books, you need to transfer them from a computer to your Kindle.

After you purchase books and periodicals, they are stored in the Cloud and are available for transfer from Manage Your Kindle. To transfer content from your computer to your Kindle, use the USB cable you received with your device.

  1. Visit Manage Your Kindle and locate the Kindle content you want to transfer to your Kindle.
  2. From the Actions drop-down, select Download & Transfer via USB.
  3. From the drop-down, select your Kindle, and then click Download.

    Be sure you remember which folder you download your content file to. You will transfer your Kindle content from this folder to your Kindle.

  4. Connect your Kindle to your computer with the USB cable.

    Your Kindle appears in the same location on your computer that external USB drives appear.

    • For Windows users, this is typically in the Computer or My Computer menu.
    • For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop.

  5. Open the Kindle drive and locate the Documents folder inside of that drive.
  6. Locate the downloaded file on your computer and copy it to the Documents folder on your Kindle drive.
  7. Safely eject your Kindle from your computer.
  8. From your Kindle, press the Home button to view your Kindle content.
